Policy on minimising the use of plastics
According to the [Tzu Chi University’s Waste Reduction and Campus Environment Friendly Implementation Highlights]( Point 2.2 )
TCU encourage everyone to use reusable eating utensils, so in the cafeteria in two campus, do not provide plastic bag and disposable tableware for consumer to buy their food. Besides, the attendees need to use the reusable utensils in any conference and event they attend.
Reduced Plastic Shopping-Eco Laundry Detergent Vending Machine
Eco-friendly laundry detergent costs NT$40 for 1 liter, which can save about 4,000 large plastic bottles a year, equivalent to a reduction of 1,363 kilograms of carbon emissions and 560 kilograms of plastic use. Through the efforts of the USR Center at Tzu Chi University, Tzu Chi University and Hualien Tzu Chi Hospital have installed eco-friendly laundry detergent vending machines, in order to promote an environmentally friendly life that reduces the use of plastics.
From Idea to Action: Love the Earth with Eco-Consumption at TCU’s Bazaar

Developing a plastic-free consumption model: TCU Bazaar, a mini-farmers’ market, where the “Amis Organic Agricultural Production Group” collaborates with the USR team to develop plastic-free packaging. Taking reference from the packaging methods of their grandfathers, the Amis women used “bread tree” leaves instead of plastic bags.
Tzu Chi University promotes local mini-markets, and since 2020 , invited more than 20 local farmers in Hualien to set up booths on campus monthly, emphasizing “plastic reduction and carbon reduction consumption”, and that consumers need to bring their own environmentally friendly tableware or bags, and that they can change the world with their friendly consumption behaviors.
